2014-Looking back on a great year
In 2014 KAGW showcased some of the amazing programs for Washingtonians. Here are the visual memories of a fun filled year!
Women’s club :Meditation and Healing therapy workshop January-2014
The women's club held its first activity on January25th which was a meditation and  healing workshop under the guidance of Dr. Aparna Ramaswamy  who is a licensed therapist.The session was an informal discussion around how meditation (seated, with music and active, with movemet) treats symptoms of many emotional disorders,without medication without medication
DC Central Kitchen January-2014
On January 4th , around 80 volunteers from the KAGW Malayali c ommunity prepared over 1500 meals at the DC Soup Kitchen for the h omeless as well as less fortunate in the Washington area. T he volunteers showed enthusiasm in serving the poor and t he less fortunate,while strengthening relationships within our community. T his event demonstrated team work and facilitated participation of the youth in serving the poor a nd the disadvantaged
Talent Time April-2014
The first day was held at Kilmer middle school, VA. The second day was held at UMD Shady Grove Campus. Both days had jam packed schedule because of the unusually high number of registrations. The parents and the participants cooperated very admirably with our volunteers to help organize the programs in as less stressful manner as possible The prize distribution evening also had another highlight ‘ The BEST COUPLE COMPETITION”
Yesudas Show May-2014
On May 17th 2014 Washington DC malayali community witnessed yet another outstanding Gandharva sangeetham Concert which was presented by Padmashree Dr. KJ Yesudas and his son Vijay Yesudas along with the play back singer Swetha Mohan as well as the talented actress/singer Ms. Remya Nambeesan.The show was started around 6:30 pm on Saturday evening and lasted for more than 6 hours. Dasettan, as he is affectionately called by millions of fans across the world took us from the past to present through this wonderful musical journey
Youth day July-2014
KAGW Youth Committee organized the Youth Day on July 19th at the Chantilly Community Center. More than 50 youth with their parents attended the event. The event began with a panel discussion led by Malayalee young adults who were born and brought up in the US and have made significant strides in their respective professions. The panelists reflected on their career, the journey they treaded, and provided valuable advice to their younger peers. After the panel discussion, the program was shifted to more interactive events and played games such as Jeopardy, Adzap & other games.  These games gave the youth an opportunity to socialize and get to know one another.  Finally, the program ended with Zumba, and all the kids(and some adults) were able to both exercise for an hour and have a good time
Pioneer Club July-2014
The Pioneers’ Club Meeting at the Vienna Community Center on July 12, 2014, provided a wonderful opportunity for the earlier generations of the KAGW to relax, reconnect, and enjoy! About 130 people were in attendance and many of those pioneers noted that they have not participated in the KAGW functions in years. The entertainment included a nostalgic journey titled “Madhurikkum Ormakal” to the 1950s and 60s through the ever-famous drama (KPAC) songs and film songs sung by the talented local musicians, Even though he could not be present, Padma Shri Rajan Devadas’s accomplishments were recognized and honored as he is KAGW’s Pioneer of the Year. The meeting also provided a platform to honor “Pravasi Bharatiya Divas” award winner Dr. Parthasaradhi Pillai. 
A Day to Play July-2014
KAGW celebrated the Annual Sports Meet 2014 on Sat 26th July at the NOVA Sports Complex in Chantilly, VA. The event was a huge success with active participation from the community. Around 110 athletes from the DC Metro area including Baltimore and Northern Virginia took part in the events.
Onam September-2014
KAGW held its annual Onam festivities on September 20th, 2014 at Fairfax High School. Onam event included special appearance and presence of  one of the India’s finest performer Stephen Devassy well complemented by mouth-watering Sadya catered by Aditi, and first hand release of KAGW’s Theme song “Malayalame”. We are thankful for the support extended by Washington DC metro  Malayalee community during the event. The vibrant.positive energy was evident as attendees and volunteers started gathering starting early stage of the event.
Adopt-A-Road October-2014
On 18th October KAGW organized a community service event - road cleaning - in and around Sri Siva Vishnu Temple and Cipriano Road in Lanham, MD. KAGW collaborated with SSV Temple for cleaning the Cipriano Road and the temple
Kerala Paravi and Eid October-2014
Kerala Paravi and Eid was celebrated with a bang on October 25th 2014 by KAGW. The event was witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd of around 350 residents of the Washington metropolitan area. The main attractions were the very popular tatt kada selling all-time favorite Kerala delicacies, a very busy mehendi booth which was the hot favorite of all the kids and ladies at the event and a professional “Grab-A-PROP & Strike-A-Pose” photo booth with a dessert backdrop and a life-size camel prop! A captivating performance on the KAGW Theme song illustrating the history and prominent factors of “Daivathinde Swantham..” Kerala was the curtain-raiser. The highlight of the event was the enticing Kathakali performance by the talented Anupama Varma and Preetha Kandanchatha from Toronto, Canada

Benoy Thomas appointed to Maryland Children’s Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council
Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has appointed prominent Indian American Benoy Thomas to the Children’s Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council. The appointment is for four years. Thomas is likely to take the oath of office in the second week of December. The Council, which was formed in 2000, is tasked with identifying environment-related health issues for children and protecting children from exposure to environmental hazards. It also advises the Maryland General \ Assembly on legislation and recommends guidelines for agencies to help reduce and eliminate children’s exposure to environmental hazards, according to its website. This is the second commission Thomas, a US Department of Justice official, has been appointed to by O’Malley. In September 2013, he was named to be a member of the Commission on Environmental Justice and Sustainable Communities (CEJSC).

Obituary
It is with great sorrow, we inform you the sad demise of Dr. TD Ninan (84), former president of Kerala Association of Greater Washington. He is survived by his wife Yasuko, son Dan Ninan, and daughter Sarah. Memorial Service was on Monday November 17, 2014 at 11  AM at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd, Silver spring MD  20901.  
We are deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of Mrs. Gourikutty Unnithan, wife of late Sri Gopalan Unnithan and mother of Raghu G. Nath at the age of 87 years in Kerala on November 21, 2014. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 24th at his residence in Vettiyar, Mavelikara , Kerala.
